By Kyle Daniels

This past weekend, Chancellor Johnathan Bennett (Chance The Rapper) married his longtime girlfriend Kirstin Corley at the Pelican Hill resort in Newport Beach, California. The two exchanged vows in front of 150 family members and friends in a ceremony held under a huge rotunda overlooking the ocean. Guests included Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and mutual friend and comedian Dave Chappelle.

The rapper went into great detail on Twitter Wednesday (March 6), recalling the exact moment he locked eyes with Kirsten at the young age of nine. It happened during an impromptu performance at his Moms office party in 2003. Out came three girls performing Destinys Child, he locked eyes and immediately fell in love. He ended the sweet story with: “16 years later it’s happening. This weekend is the time, and the place is my wedding. I’m gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny.”

While matrimony is surely a huge commitment, the man of faith undoubtedly has every chance to  succeed. He’s already displayed excellence as a commited father, artist and philanthropist. To promote even more positivity around his wedding weekend, let’s reflect on ‘3’ of his biggest commitments.

  1. In September of 2016, Chance started the non-profit SocialWorks, which aims to empower youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement. The organization fosters leadership, accessibility and positivity within Chicago. A few of their initiatives are: OpenMike, Warmest Winter, Kids of the Kingdom, the New Chance: Arts & Literature Fund, and My State of Mind.

2. In March of 2017, he announced a donation of $1 million to Chicago Public Schools. To make things sweeter a few days before the school year started, he announced that $2.2 million was raised by his nonprofit Social Works. It was distributed to 20 schools for their art and education programs. The total included a $1 million donation from the Chicago Bulls.

3. In October of 2018, Chance announced that he was donating $1 million to help improve mental health services in Chicago.Six mental health providers in Cook County each received $100,000 grants and SocialWorks started an initiative called “My State of Mind” to help connect people with treatment.

Chance is living proof that celebrities can follow their dreams and still be popular for doing the right thing. Whether he makes headlines as Chance The Rapper, Father, Husband or Philanthropist; he already deserves of a statue in his hometown.
